Objective:To create an interesting ceramic sculpture using pinch pot method.
TEKS:(2) Creative expression. The student communicates ideas through original artwork using a variety of media with appropriate skills. The student expresses thoughts and ideas creatively while challenging the imagination, fostering reflective thinking, and developing disciplined effort and progressive problem-solving skills. The student is expected to:
Settings:Large group instruction day 1 and 2
Individual work day 3 -12
Focus Activity:Creating a ceramic sculpture / understanding material and manipulating it to suit design needs.
CONNECTION TO PRIOR LEARNING: Concept of original design and changing material to meet design needs.Fundamentals of arts , texture , space and form.
OBJECTIVE STATEMENT:Students create a ceramic sculpture using pinch pot method.
Criteria:
PURPOSE OF LEARNING:To understand material , to analyze the concept of physical balance . In order to experience process, material and give it a new shape and form.
INSTRUCTIONAL STEPS:
Day 1:Sculpture/ Clay Notes/ STUDENTS read and sign CLAY CONTRACT (rules and procedures and alternative project)
Day 4:Designs will be graded today/ Last day to work on Design and turn in for grade. Students will also have access to play-doh so they can practice basic techniques.
Day 5 : Pass out clay .review procedures of getting and storing clay .Practice procedures. Give 5 minutes before bell to clean up and properly store clay and project. review steps/ materials/ clean up & storage instructions. Pass out clay to ALL kids that have finished and had designs approved/ graded by teacher.
Day 6-11: Week 2: Work on Project
RETEACH/EXTENSION:Assessment based on rubric and Fulfillment of criteria. If student performance low teacher models and students follow step.
CLOSURE (REVIEW): CLOSURE : clay is a very versatile medium and has been used by artist since prehistoric time .We will expand our knowledge of creating 3D mold able objects by carving a solid surface in our next project.
- (A) use visual solutions to create original artwork by problem solving through direct observation,original sources, experiences, narrations, and imagination;
- (B) communicate a variety of applications for design solutions;
- (F) demonstrate effective use of art media and tools in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, fiber art, design, and digital art and media.
- Material:Materials:
- 2 lbs of clay (per student)
- zip lock bag (storing clay)
- spray bottle
- slip bottle
- Styrofoam plate / trash bag (storing projects)
- various clay tools for scoring/ smoothing

OBJECTIVE STATEMENT:Students create a ceramic sculpture using pinch pot method.
Criteria:
- Make an animal /creature
- Minimum of 2 pinch pots used
- Pinch pots must be connected
- Must have additive and subtractive elements
- Must have 2 or more incorporated textures
PURPOSE OF LEARNING:To understand material , to analyze the concept of physical balance . In order to experience process, material and give it a new shape and form.
INSTRUCTIONAL STEPS:
Day 1:Sculpture/ Clay Notes/ STUDENTS read and sign CLAY CONTRACT (rules and procedures and alternative project)
- Students take notes/ Briefly introduce Pinch Pot Project
- Materials:
- 2 lbs of clay (per student)
- zip lock bag (storing clay)
- spray bottle
- slip bottle
- Styrofoam plate / trash bag (storing projects)
- various clay tools for scoring/ smoothing
- Spend the first 5-10 minutes of class showing the Project Power Point. Tell student that during today’s demo, they should be paying close attention because they’ll need to begin brainstorming their design.
- Have all material out and ready for today’s demonstration:
- Show/ Explain the clay tools
- Demonstrate: Coil, Slab, and Pinch Pot
- GRADE: on the back of their design sheet, students must sketch an example of each technique and write down the process steps/ take notes (you will repeat information from Monday’s powerpoint). When the students begin working on their DESIGN they’ll have notes, and teacher can count those as 10 points of their Thumbnail/ Design grade.
- Demonstrate in any order, be clear, to the point, and quick. Remember, student’s lose focus quickly. Have base pieces already pre-cut. Have 3 examples already made. (You don’t have to have an entire project made- just show examples)
- Show Pinch Project Power Point. Let kids know of criteria
- After demonstration: students brainstorm/ begin researching.

- Students will spend the next 5 days working on their projects. Students will only have 1 week to finish their projects. They must meet criteria from PowerPoint (rubric ). If needed Monday may be a BONUS day.
- Students work on self evaluation justification after completion of the project.
